NHS 40+ Health Checks
As part of our ongoing work to improve services to residents in mid and south Essex, we at NHS Mid and South Essex want to reach out and collaborate with people who access and experience NHS 40+ health checks.
You can help us achieve this by taking a moment to take part in our survey and have your say in how our services are designed and delivered. The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete, but it may take a little longer if you choose to write long responses.
An NHS Health Check helps spot early signs of conditions like heart disease, stroke and diabetes, and gives you personalised advice on simple lifestyle changes to help you stay healthy. It can tell you whether you're at higher risk of getting certain health problems, such as:
- heart disease
- diabetes
- kidney disease
- stroke
During the check-up you'll discuss how to reduce your risk of these conditions. If you’re aged over 65, you’ll also be told about symptoms of dementia to look out for.
This survey will be open until Friday 30th January 2025
Criteria for 40+ health checks
You’re eligible if you’re aged 40–74, live in England and don’t already have conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure. The aim is to invite eligible people once every five years, usually by your GP (by letter, text or phone), or sometimes via the Essex Wellbeing Service on your GP’s behalf.
The age range is based on evidence showing risk starts to increase from our 40s, and this is a key time when early action can prevent problems later on. In Essex, we can also offer health checks to some people aged 75+ who don’t have existing conditions.
If you think you’re eligible but haven’t had an invite, you don’t need to wait — you can contact your GP or the Essex Wellbeing Service on 0300 303 9988 to book your free check.
Please note the check is for people who are aged 40 to 74 who do not have any of the pre-existing conditions listed here: NHS Health Check - NHS (www.nhs.uk)
