Together in Action

Who are we?

The Basildon and Brentwood alliance working closely together with local partners and Active Essex come together as one to support the increase of activity for the residents of the Alliance.

the Alliance met in October 2022 and recognised that all services across health, and social care, and voluntary sectors were stretched, could work more efficiently together and there were many common areas that we could work as joined priorities.
*Reducing health Inequalities with a focus on the wider determinants of health
*Developing a Live Well Strategy
*Developing Integrated Neighbourhood Teams
*Distributed Leadership
*Identifying areas where we can work together
*Stabilising Primary Care
*Need to add Transfer of Care Hubs

There were commonalities in looking at what strategically works in health as preventative, long-lasting solutions for patients to improve their health increase their physical activity, and thus reducing the need for accessing primary care, overall reducing pressure with cost-efficient outcomes.

Active Essex

Local Delivery Pilot

The Essex Local Delivery Pilot (LDP) is an initiative, led by Active Essex, to build healthier, more active communities across the county. An active lifestyle creates huge benefits for the health and wellbeing of individuals and families, as well as making local communities more vibrant, connected, and resilient.

What do we do?

Working with system partners across primary care networks, statuary bodies, community services, and the third sector to improve the health system’s ability to tackle physical inactivity and improve the longer-term health of patients through physical activity interventions

We can provide support in terms of resources, funding, physical packs, linking up with various partners to increase activity, or decrease inactivity, and support work around fall prevention and general wellbeing.

Across the service projects we are also looking to support wellbeing in work spaces, and organizations, having an opportunity to create physical activities and wellbeing initiatives.

Basildon and Brentwood Alliance were pleased to receive an e-bike donated from Ford Motor Company as part of the Electric Bike Loan Workplace Pilot organised by the Find Your Active Basildon partnership. The partnership aims to improve the health and mobility of our frontline primary care support staff. This significant contribution will support their team in delivering essential one-to-one care across the community.

Kelly Herring, a dedicated Social Prescriber from the West Basildon Primary Care Network, is the first recipient of an e-bike. As a non-driver, Kelly faces unique challenges in her role, and this new addition will greatly improve her ability to efficiently reach patients and community projects. She said “I am really excited about getting an e-bike. This is going to transform my working day by enabling me to get out and about in the community, reducing my travel time and therefore giving more time to the people who count.”

During the handover ceremony, Simon Williams, Basildon and Brentwood Deputy Alliance Director, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “Kelly is one of our most active and busy Social Prescribers. This e-bike will make a massive impact on her daily work and personal life. We are very happy for Kelly.”

Benefits of the e-bike for Kelly:

    • Improved Mobility: The e-bike offers Kelly the freedom to reach patients and community projects with ease.
    • Cost-Efficiency: The bike reduces travel expenses, allowing her to serve the community with minimal costs.
    • Sustainability: E-bikes are eco-friendly, aligning with our green initiatives.
    • Health and Activity: The e-bike enables her to increase her daily physical activity levels as she travels between appointments.

Maria Medina, Basildon and Brentwood Alliance's Community Engagement and Partnerships Officer, has worked closely with all partners involved to bring this initiative to life. She commented, “This is a fantastic opportunity for staff across the Basildon area to increase their activity and reduce costs by saving in petrol and parking or even bus fares.”

About the Electric Bike Loan Workplace Pilot

The pilot will provide long-term, no-cost e-bike loans to staff members, particularly targeting those facing travel barriers or leading less active lifestyles. This initiative aims to promote active and sustainable travel in the long run. A limited number of e-bikes will be available for loan to staff working or living in the Basildon and Brentwood area for a period of approximately six months.

Health and care partners in Basildon make great strides towards supporting local people to get active

    13 Mar 2024

If you’re one of the many people who are looking to improve your health and wellbeing by getting more active one of the best and most accessible ways of doing this is by walking. Walking has been shown to have lots of health benefits and for many people will be the easiest way to work towards the recommended 30 minutes of activity five days a week.

Walking together with other people can be an excellent way to improve both physical and mental health. With that in mind partners in the Basildon and Brentwood alliance have joined up with Basildon Sporting Village to provide a weekly walking opportunity for local people who would like to get more active in the company of other like-minded people.

The walks are a great example of the NHS, local councils, leisure centres and other local service providers working together for the benefit of their local communities.

The sessions are for everyone but the organisers hope that, in particular, health and care staff take the time to join in to support their own health and wellbeing as well as encouraging others in the communities they work in to take steps towards becoming more active.

Basildon Sporting Village has provided their athletics track free of charge each week for the walking session, and want to encourage everyone who comes along for the walks to explore some of the other great activities that take place there.

The Buggy Walks project, led by Caroline, has been a lifeline for new mothers, offering them a chance to improve their mental health and physical activity through regular outdoor walks. These walks provided a supportive environment where participants could socialize and enjoy the benefits of physical exercise in a relaxed setting.

Each week, up to ten mothers joined Caroline for these walks, which quickly became a highlight for many. The impact on mental health was significant, with participants noting improvements in self-esteem and social connections. One mother shared how the walks helped her leave the house and engage with other mothers, while another found the outdoor setting less intimidating than indoor groups, especially beneficial for those with social anxiety.

The physical benefits were equally notable. Many participants appreciated the opportunity to increase their activity levels, integrating regular exercise into their routines. The walks not only helped them stay active but also provided a much-needed break from the isolation of maternity leave.

Success stories from the project are heartwarming. Participants reported that the walks helped them meet other new mothers, fostering a sense of community and support. The regular meetups boosted self-esteem and provided a positive, inclusive environment, thanks to Caroline’s friendly and supportive demeanor. Mothers felt welcomed and valued, making the experience even more enjoyable.

Looking ahead, there is strong interest in continuing the walks, with five participants expressing a desire to keep them going. By promoting the walks and scheduling them in diverse locations, the project aims to reach a broader audience and benefit more mothers in the community.

The Buggy Walks project has had a significant positive impact on its participants, improving both mental health and physical activity. The feedback highlights the value of such community initiatives, especially for new mothers. With the right support and promotion, Buggy Walks can continue to thrive and benefit more mothers in the community.

Testimonials from participants underscore the project’s success. One mother shared, “When I gave birth to my boy, I was worried about meeting other mums. Being outside is a great idea & the regular meet has done my self-esteem the world of good. There is no other group I have found like this; I can’t fault this group & we look forward to it each week.” Another participant noted, “The walk helped me to get out of the house & the opportunity to talk to other mums. It was great to get more active.” A third mother, who struggles with social anxiety, found the walks to be the perfect way to relax and socialize, saying, “I find indoor groups far too intimidating, but the walk around the park was more relaxed. I was always made to feel very welcome; it’s been a brilliant way to break up the week.” Lastly, a participant who has returned to work still makes a point of joining the walk whenever possible, praising Caroline’s friendly and supportive nature.

The Buggy Walks project is a shining example of how community initiatives can make a real difference in people’s lives, providing support, connection, and a boost to both mental and physical health.
