Thorpe Bay Surgery in Southend has started the process of applying to NHS Mid and South Essex to close one of its branch surgeries, the Shaftesbury Avenue Surgery.
Thorpe Bay Surgery currently provides primary medical services from three locations:
Thorpe Bay Surgery – 99 Tyrone Road, Thorpe Bay, Essex SS1 3HD
The Shaftesbury Avenue Surgery – 119 Shaftesbury Avenue, Thorpe Bay, Essex SS1 3AN
North Shoebury Surgery - Frobisher Way, Shoeburyness, Southend-on-Sea SS3 8UT
Following a previous practice merger, patients already travel across all three sites to attend appointments. Patients also benefit from additional primary care services delivered from Norton Place in Shoeburyness by the local Primary Care Network. Visit the Primary Care Network Website to find more information.
Thorpe Bay Surgery is currently in the process of patient engagement to understand the impact of the proposed branch closure on its patients and has provided a patient FAQ and link to an engagement survey on its websites here:
The practice is also holding a patient information event from 2pm – 4pm on Tuesday 4th June 2024 at Norton Place, 162 Ness Road, Shoebury, SS3 9DL. A link to RSVP to the event is available on all practice websites through the links above, or speak to a member of the GP reception team.
How can a GP practice close a branch surgery?
If a GP practice wishes to close a branch surgery, it must make a formal application to the local NHS for approval. Approval would be subject to full consideration of the impact such a closure would have on the practice’s registered patient population, and the application must evidence feedback received from patients and other key stakeholders.
